Notice period under Qatar Labour Law
Under Article 49 of the Labour Law:
- Less than 5 years of service: 1 month notice period.
- 5 years or more: 2 months notice period.
- Fixed-term contracts: must honour the full contract unless mutual agreement; early resignation requires paying compensation.
Notice must be given in writing. The notice period starts the day after the employer receives the letter.
New rules since 2020: no more NOC required
Law No. 18 of 2020 abolished the No Objection Certificate (NOC) requirement. Workers in Qatar can now change jobs during or at the end of their contract without the previous employer's permission, provided they respect the notice period. This is a major shift from the former Kafala system.
End-of-service gratuity calculation
Under Article 54, workers with at least 1 year of continuous service are entitled to end-of-service gratuity, calculated as:
- Minimum 3 weeks of basic salary per year of service (companies may offer more).
- Prorated for incomplete years (if 1 year completed).
- Based on last basic salary (excluding allowances), unless contract specifies otherwise.
Example: 7 years × 3 weeks × (basic salary ÷ 4.33) = approximately 4.8 months of basic salary.

Common mistakes
- ❌ Verbal resignation only — always provide written notice.
- ❌ Leaving before the notice period ends — may forfeit end-of-service benefits.
- ❌ Not requesting written confirmation of acceptance.
- ❌ Forgetting to request visa and work permit cancellation (prevents re-entry).
- ❌ Resigning without first opening a new work permit if staying in Qatar.
FAQ
Can my employer refuse my resignation?
No. Resignation is a unilateral right. The employer can only verify compliance with the notice period.
What happens if I leave without serving notice?
You may be required to pay compensation equivalent to the notice period salary, and may lose part of your end-of-service gratuity.
Can I resign during probation?
Yes, with 1 month notice unless the contract specifies a shorter period.
Do I need a lawyer?
Not for standard resignations. Consult a lawyer only in case of dispute over unpaid wages or forced resignation.
